Rare earth magnets for the highest demands

Samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets are a rare earth magnet made from samarium, cobalt and other rare earth metals. These alloys are melted, pulverized, pressed and sintered to produce high-performance magnets.

SmCo magnets offer high magnetic energy products and extremely low temperature coefficients. They reach a maximum working temperature of 350 °C and are particularly stable at high temperatures. Their excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance makes them ideal for applications in aerospace, defense, medicine, communications and more.

With a BHmax value between 16 MGOe and 32 MGOe and a theoretical limit of 34 MGOe, SmCo magnets offer a reliable solution for demanding technical challenges.

Classification of Smarium Cobalt Magnets

According to composition ratios

Samarium cobalt magnets are divided into two main types: SmCo5 and Sm2Co17. These refer to the ratio of samarium atoms to cobalt atoms in the alloy.

Difference between SmCo5 and Sm2Co17

SmCo5

SmCo5 magnets have a lower magnetic energy product compared to Sm2Co17, but offer better machinability and are therefore well suited for producing parts with special shapes.

Sm2Co17

Sm2Co17 magnets can achieve a magnetic energy product of up to 28 MGOe. They have excellent magnetic performance, are cheaper than SmCo5 and have higher power consumption.

Characteristics

Samarium cobalt magnets offer excellent temperature stability with a maximum operating temperature between 250 and 350 °C and a Curie temperature of 700 to 800 °C.

These magnets are known for their cost and sensitivity to price fluctuations due to the cobalt market.

The material is brittle and typically square or round in shape. Complex shapes increase the processing difficulties and thus the price.

Due to the brittleness, small breakages may occur at the corners. Customers with aesthetic requirements should take this into account when using it.
